Cooperative Care

Taking care of your dog's medical and care needs doens't need to be a struggle!

Cooperative care is a type of training that involves teaching dogs to actively participate in their own care, such as grooming, handling, and veterinary procedures. Rather than simply tolerating these procedures, dogs who are trained for cooperative care learn to happily participate in them.

Some skills that we can teach are: wearing a harness, nail trimming and filing, administering ear and eye ointments, bathing, brushing, drying, teeth brushing, mouth checks, physical restraint, blood draws, x-rays, wearing a muzzle, or an Elizabethan cone.

We can introduce cooperative care for grooming and veterinary procedures long before we ever need it.

Cooperative care refers to dog training (or other animals) that results in fear free cooperation. The purpose is to help dogs gain confidence as they learn to tolerate husbandry processes necessary for their care willingly. Cooperative care behaviors are not only beneficial for all dogs, including pet dogs, canine athletes, and working dogs, but also fun to train. The primary objective of these exercises is to alleviate stress for both the handler and the dog, turning unpleasant processes into positive ones. During the initial stages, more time is required, but once the dog has mastered the fundamental skills of the concept, things speed up. In this stage, cooperative care can be learned and applied in various situations.
Fear Free® is a rigorous training program that educates veterinary care givers and pet professionals on how to provide care for dogs and cats in a fear free, low anxiety setting and manner. It is available to veterinary staff, pet professionals (kennels, groomers, trainers), shelters, and pet owners. Professionals who are “Fear Free Certified Professionals” have completed the training, and are required to earn additional continuing education credits each year in order to maintain their certifications.
